What Up Dough was created in 2006. One particularly broke Christmas, artist Kathy Leisen convinced her friend/landlord Mary Beth Carolan to bake gift cookies with her. Call it a collaboration because MB was insistent that nobody wants more cookies at Christmas and BAM! Bake at home cookie dough was conceived. Before Nestle there was What Up Dough.
The name? Architect and pun pro, Neil Meredith suggested it. For seven years it stood as a stand-in-joke name. When it came time to get serious about it, we couldn't. 'What Up Dough!' is Detroit's way to say hello. Check out Tone Tone's Anthem song and video dedicated to this great phrase.
You should know that chef MB (that's me), like many of you, 'isn't really a sweets person'. In truth, I've never met a 'not really a sweets person' who doesn't eat sweets. Dig deeper for the truth and most of them save themselves for something really decadent. That's all we do, decadent, totally over the top, wholesome cookies and ice cream sandwiches.
